
This scenic park borrows its name from the beautiful and famous Lake Nakuru. It is a large shallow rift valley soda lake popularly known for supporting an incredible birdlife and mostly flamingos. Other birds commonly spotted around the lake are the pelicans.
The southern part of Nakuru park area was first conserved as a bird sanctuary in 1961 and then later on gazetted as one of Kenya’s National parks in 1968. The park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is internationally recognized as an IBA. In 1990, the park was declared as a RAMSAR Site.

Lake Nakuru national park boasts a variety of plant species and several animals including waterbucks, hippos, crocodiles, Rothschild giraffes, the black and white rhinoceros that were introduced in a rhino sanctuary and predators such as the lions, cheetahs and leopards.

They include hamerkop, African fish eagle, pied kingfisher, Goliath Heron, Verreuax’s eagle, Northern Shoveler, Red-eyed Dove, Ring-necked Dove, Laughing Dove, Tambourine Dove, Yellow-billed Duck, Cape Teal, Red-billed Duck, Northern Pintail, Southern Pochard, Common Cuckoo, White-browed Coucal, Levaillant’s Cuckoo, Little Swift, Horus Swift, African Palm-Swift and pelicans.
