Kenya’s Misty Jewel of the North
Rising dramatically from the scorching desert plains of Kenya’s far north, Marsabit National Park is one of the country’s most unusual and rewarding wild places. Located about 560 kilometres north of Nairobi, this remote park centres on an extinct volcanic mountain, whose forested slopes capture moisture from passing clouds and create a cool, green oasis surrounded by the arid Chalbi Desert. The landscape is unlike anywhere else in Kenya, with ancient crater lakes, dense mist-covered forest, and open scrub stretching to the horizon. It is a destination for travellers who want to leave the crowded safari circuits behind and experience raw, untouched wilderness.

The park is famous for its wildlife and birdlife. Marsabit was once home to Ahmed, the legendary tusker elephant protected by presidential decree in the 1970s, and the park still shelters elephants with impressive tusks, along with greater kudu, lesser kudu, Grevy’s zebra, reticulated giraffe, leopards and lions. Birdwatchers will find over 400 recorded species, including Somali ostrich, vultures, eagles and a variety of northern specialities rarely seen elsewhere in Kenya. Lake Paradise, a beautiful crater lake framed by forest, is a highlight and one of the most photogenic spots in the region, while the nearby Gof Choba crater offers a striking volcanic backdrop.
Reaching Marsabit is an adventure in itself, and this is where a professional driver makes all the difference. The journey north along the Isiolo–Marsabit road passes through changing landscapes, small towns and traditional Samburu, Rendille and Borana communities, and road conditions can be demanding. With Rent a Driver Kenya, you can travel in comfort and safety with an experienced local driver who knows the route, the terrain and the best places to stop along the way.
